The rest of the door hardware has to be removed especially the knobs. Most of the door knobs will have two screws which have to be removed. Remember to put on rubber gloves before starting the process to protect your hands from cleaning agents and chemicals. The level of tarnish collection on the hardware should be analyzed before starting the procedure. If it has not been cleaned for several years there is a need to soak it in concentrated ammonia for about sixty minutes. For lesser tarnishing this is not required.
Sliding hardware given its traditional application as barn door hardware is made of solid steel. The standard track is 2 wide by 1/4 thick making it strong and durable. Standard track systems can bear doors that weigh up to 400lbs! Additionally the bearings in the wheels of the door hangers are guaranteed lubricated for life. Essentially these sliding door hardware systems are built to outlast the life of your home.
This basic idea leads to locks of all types - ordinary keyed locks hand operated dead bolt locks simple latched locks and so on. These all employ this same sort of locking mechanism. Even the ordinary latch that is turned by the door handle and fits into the latch plate is a kind of bolt and on many ordinary keyed locks the handle is prevented to from turning when the door is locked so that this latch or bolt stays where it is holding the door shut.
Barn door hardware is essentially large sliding barn doors that are slightly expensive but elegant looking. The hardware comprises of metal tracks and wheels and bolts required for it to be wall-mounted. An ordinary sliding track can be extremely costly - almost $800 for high-end quality. The doors are not included in this costing and must be purchased locally and later customized to fit your preferences. Some are fitted with sliding mirrors which can be used in bathrooms for extra privacy. The greatest advantage of course is that with it you need not reserve extra space that you would normally have to keep for an ordinary door to be opened. These doors do not slide into walls; rather these add to the overall decor of any room.
