The rest of the door hardware has to be removed especially the knobs. Most of the door knobs will have two screws which have to be removed. Remember to put on rubber gloves before starting the process to protect your hands from cleaning agents and chemicals. The level of tarnish collection on the hardware should be analyzed before starting the procedure. If it has not been cleaned for several years there is a need to soak it in concentrated ammonia for about sixty minutes. For lesser tarnishing this is not required.
Bypass hardware allows you to have three different doors in the same space yet save space. Since the hardware is a dark-brown color they would go well with our red barn door. You can use this combo in applications where there is a large space that does not lend itself well to traditional doors or frames. One reason you may want to use this barn door hardware combo is that you may have a large space that could use up to three doors at one time but you do not want to have a bulky door entrance or a lot of walls. This is the perfect solution-just attach the hardware on the ceiling and doors and you are done!
If you are restoring an older home you may want to use restoration hardware to maintain the look and feel of the home when it was first constructed. One caution here is that you will need to make sure the locks are appropriate for the thickness of the door as this varied in older construction. While you are going through the selection process make sure you take your time and think through all the items that need to be chosen let your personal style and character come through and have fun!
If you are convinced about the less severe tarnishing you need to apply the polish using a soft material; cloth would be the most perfect option. Rub the vintage door hardware with the polish. Hard rubbing is highly recommended. If you are worried about rubbing hard on this antique hardware you should know that hard rubbing would help in the removal of more grime grit and tarnish from the antique piece thereby helping in the restoration of its original look. Sometimes you need to spend hours before the door hardware regains its lost style. Several pieces of clothes will also be required.
